Savor the Day

Many people know the phrase ‘Carpe Diem’ … Seize the Day …
I will freely admit that semantics is one of my favorite games, that I love
trying to find just the ‘right’ word to express what I think or feel ...
‘seize the day’ brings to my mind an image of grabbing and grasping,
as if one would wring from a day all that it has to offer …
‘seize’ to me implies ‘taking’, and not always gently …

Ah, but to Savor the Day … now this I can get behind … this
I can do … to savor is to enjoy, to be thankful for what is
offered, to accept it with wonder … and oh, how very much
there is to savor …

Savor that first luxurious stretch upon waking, when you
realize that you’ve been given another day … or the first
sip of coffee … or tea … or the crisp wake-up taste of
cold orange juice … savor the sound of birdsong, or
chittering squirrels, or children at play … let music flow
around and through you, uplifting your heart and spirit …

Savor the scent of flowers, or new-mown grass, or
coming rain … drift with the clouds as they make
their journey across the sky, whether they are
brilliantly white or stormy gray, fluffy or soft or
the finest wispy strands … enjoy the warmth and
light of the sun, the vastness of the upward depths
of the sky …

Almost anything can be savored … laundry washes
away past negativity and brightens colors, ironing
can smooth the wrinkles out of thoughts and feelings …
doing dishes gives the opportunity to play with all
those magnificent bubbles …

Of course, I will also admit that some things are
not always easy to savor … there are days when
I would much rather stay home than take myself
off to work … even then, though, it is possible to
savor looking forward to simply ‘being done’ …
to having given my best at whatever I’ve been doing …
and to how glorious it will feel to sit down
and take my shoes off …

Savor the day … what fun it is !!!
